A DAY IN THE LIFE OF William McIntosh

Business Development Manager

How long have you worked at Hill?

Almost 10 years. I started 05/01/2015 in the yard as a senior warehouse controller. In early 2017 I had to have surgery on my spine and I was unable to work in the yard and stores any more. Ian gave me an opportunity to cover for the Ireland sales role as the previous sales manager moved on from Hill after a very successful 14 years. I have since been promoted to Business Development Manager and I still work with all of the Irish customers but I also cover some key accounts including Finning UK & Ireland. I also cover all of the Telesales in the UK.

How did you come to work at Hill?

I have managed shops and warehouses for most of my adult life. The role came up to run the yard and stores and I took the chance after researching the company. I grew up playing around heavy machinery and Hill sparked an interest for me. It was one of the best moves that I have made.

My mum taught me that no matter what I do I should always come home being able to say “I achieved x”

What is your daily routine – describe a typical day?

Well……….
There is no such thing as a typical day in Hill Engineering but currently it would involve the following:
1) Preparing the shipping schedule for the next few days.
2) Meeting with our production & dispatch teams to confirm the activities for the next few days.
3) Communicating with various customers whether it just be calling to check-in or following up on quotes etc.
4) Confirming orders and lead times with customers.
5) Working with our after-sales department to ensure that our customers requirements are met.
6) Working with the Commercial Manager to help co-ordinate the sales team to ensure that all of our customers are well attended to.
7) Working with our operations manager to ensure that the factory is supplying our customer orders efficiently.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the customers and the people I work with. This industry isn’t like any other. It’s a lot less formal most of the time and I am blessed with an excellent customer base and I work in a great team. Its more like a family than anything else.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

Fitting everything in. We are a very busy and successful company selling a world leading brand. It is a very busy work environment which suits me as I always like to be busy. I find myself challenged every day in my job and that’s the way I like it.

What are the general benefits of working for a company like Hill?

Hill Engineering has allowed me to grow more than any other company that I have worked for. I have a very diverse role which provides new challenges every day which I really enjoy.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Don’t settle for the easy route. I have worked in a good few jobs in my adult life and a lot of them were easy requiring small amounts of effort but I was never satisfied. Always look for a challenge and it won’t feel like a job.

Best piece of advice you have been given, and did you take it?

My mum taught me that no matter what I do I should always come home being able to say “I achieved x” This job allows me to do that and more.

Dream job (if possible)

Cheesy as it sounds I think that this is it. My job is a lot more than processing orders and organising dispatch schedules. As the BDM for Ireland & Telesales I get to work with a lot of different people and its always a lot of fun.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am blessed with 2 great kids and in my spare time I like to mostly be with them and my wife on our little farm. Discovering the animals and flowers etc. with a 5yo and 2yo – it’s never boring.

Tell us something you do or have done that would surprise your work colleagues?

Before my back operation I did a lot of courses to become a mountain guide. I have climbed every mountain in The Mournes, NI.
